Getting ahead

Life is a race.

Schooling can become stressful.

Competitiveness can cause pressure.

Personal success, however, does not have to come with a huge price tag: losing sleep, worrying about exams, sacrificing time with family.

Study wisely and learn to develop yourself into a person you are proud of, able to use what you have learnt to fulfil your dreams and enrich your understanding of the world.

Conversations

“The English language has a deceptive air of simplicity.” (Dorothy Sayers)

Learning English comes with its twists and turns as the English language may seem deceptively easy but is actually more “interesting” and challenging than it seems, particularly for non-native speakers of the language. How can you learn to master English and appreciate the various nuances and meaning conveyed by the use of certain words in different contexts?

Talk more. Conversations in, and out of, class are important. When you speak, you learn that you have to be clear and concise so others can understand you. What you say has to make sense so you try to organise your thoughts to articulate them more coherently. Supporting your point of view and listening to others’ ideas teach you to engage in meaningful discussions.

Read and learn

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.” (Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft)

Reading is critical to learning. You can read anywhere. You can read from a book, on a digital device, from a picture novel or comic.

We all begin as children, very curious about the world around us. Gradually, as we grow older, we get caught up in the race to be better than others at school, at work, in life. We forget to make time to read.

We need stories to inspire us, fill us with hope and imagination, help us to dream and explore possibilities, let us know we are not alone. Reading keeps us alive and excited. For some, reading may be a chore.

Remember what Stephen King says: “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”

You can learn to enjoy reading. Become a Bold Learner to find out more.
